THE VICTORIAN STATE ROSE GARDEN. WERRIBEE PARK
This map is drawn as a panoramic view. Traditionally rose gardens designs were formal. The central feature at Werribee is a traditional formal structure, centering on a Tudor Rose.
A walk in a rose garden is a journey of the senses, of the stunning colours and variegations, the exquisite forms and of course the fragrance. Rose gardens are unusual as they are designed to showcase one species the Rosacea.
THE TUDOR ROSE
This tudor rose motif is divided into five sections arranged symmetrically around a central area. Between each petal runs a pathway called an Alle that begins with an arch of climbing roses and is lined with standard roses. On the outer edge of each petals is a living garland of rambling roses festooned along graceful long looping wires in a curve. There are beds of Hybrid teas & Bush roses. Tripods of climbing roses and weeping Standards of every colour are spread throughout the petals. A pathway symbolizing a rose stem passes between two viewing mounds on its on its way to the later additions ‘the leaf” and a “the rosebud”. At the centre is a gazebo.
THE FEDERATION LEAF
The Federation Leaf commemorates the Centenary of Federation of Australia. It contains beds of Australian roses bred over the period of Federation and also contains a beautiful small traditional gazebo.
THE ROSEBUD
The “rosebud” is planted with English Roses bred by David Austin.
THE HERITAGE BORDER
The Heritage Border was planted along the fence line between the Mansion. It is about 450 metres long and contains over 500 varieties of beautiful and historic roses guaranteed to have exceptional fragrance.
